About Oxidized Bitumen (Blown Asphalt)

What is Oxidized Bitumen?

Oxidized Bitumen, also known as Blown Bitumen, Oxidized Asphalt, or Blown Asphalt, is a high-performance industrial bitumen manufactured from selected petroleum bitumen through a controlled air-blowing process.

During production, hot penetration-grade bitumen is exposed to a controlled flow of air under carefully regulated temperature and process conditions. This controlled oxidation modifies the molecular structure of the bitumen, resulting in a higher softening point, lower penetration value, increased hardness, and enhanced resistance to heat, water, chemicals, and weathering.

Unlike conventional penetration-grade bitumen, which is primarily used for road construction and asphalt paving, Oxidized Bitumen is specifically developed for industrial and construction applications requiring superior thermal stability, dimensional stability, waterproofing performance, strong adhesion, and long-term performance.

These enhanced properties make it an ideal material for roofing systems, waterproofing membranes, industrial mastics, joint sealants, protective coatings, pipe coatings, electrical insulation, and many other specialized applications.

At PETRO TAR CO., every production batch is manufactured using carefully selected raw materials and a precisely controlled air-blowing process, ensuring consistent quality and compliance with relevant ASTM standards

How is Oxidized Bitumen Produced?

The production of Oxidized Bitumen begins with carefully selected penetration-grade petroleum bitumen. The material is heated to the required process temperature before a controlled flow of air is introduced into the reactor. During oxidation, oxygen reacts with the hydrocarbon molecules, increasing molecular weight and modifying the physical characteristics of the bitumen to achieve the desired performance.

Critical production parameters, including temperature, airflow, oxidation time, and reaction conditions, are continuously monitored to ensure that each grade achieves the required softening point, penetration value, and performance characteristics.

Every production batch undergoes comprehensive laboratory testing and quality control procedures in accordance with relevant ASTM standards before shipment

Physical Characteristics of Oxidized Bitumen

Oxidized Bitumen is supplied as a solid black material with a homogeneous structure and a smooth surface. Depending on the grade and ambient temperature, its surface may appear either glossy or slightly matte. At normal temperatures, it remains hard and rigid, softening only when heated during industrial processing. As a water-insoluble petroleum product, it offers excellent handling stability during storage, transportation, and manufacturing.

Difference Between Oxidized Bitumen and Penetration Grade Bitumen

Although both Oxidized Bitumen and Penetration Grade Bitumen are produced from petroleum bitumen, they are engineered for different applications.

Penetration Grade Bitumen is primarily used in road construction and asphalt paving because it provides the flexibility and workability required to withstand traffic loads. In contrast, Oxidized Bitumen is manufactured through a controlled air-blowing process that modifies its molecular structure, producing a harder material with a higher softening point, lower penetration value, and improved resistance to heat and deformation.

As a result, Oxidized Bitumen maintains its dimensional stability and mechanical properties even under prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures, whereas conventional Penetration Grade Bitumen becomes softer and more susceptible to flow.

These characteristics make Oxidized Bitumen the preferred choice for industrial and construction applications where thermal stability, waterproofing performance, durability, and long-term reliability are essential

Understanding Oxidized Bitumen Grade Designation

Oxidized Bitumen grades are identified according to two important physical properties: Softening Point and Penetration Value. The grade designation consists of two numbers separated by a slash (/), providing a simple and internationally recognized way to identify the product’s physical characteristics and intended applications.

The first number represents the approximate Softening Point in degrees Celsius (°C), indicating the temperature at which the bitumen begins to soften under standardized test conditions. Generally, a higher softening point means better resistance to elevated temperatures and improved dimensional stability.

The second number represents the Penetration Value in tenths of a millimeter (dmm), which indicates the hardness or consistency of the bitumen. Lower penetration values represent harder grades with greater resistance to deformation, while higher penetration values indicate softer materials with increased flexibility.

Example: Oxidized Bitumen 115/15

For example, Oxidized Bitumen 115/15 has an approximate Softening Point of 115°C and a Penetration Value of 15 dmm. This combination provides excellent heat resistance, high hardness, and outstanding dimensional stability, making it one of the most widely used grades for manufacturing waterproofing membranes, roofing systems, industrial mastics, pipe coatings, and protective coatings.
